Madrid, September 30, 2025 In Spain, one out of every five young people aged 15 to 19 is enrolled in Higher Education, including Vocational Training and University programs, according to Education at a Glance 2025. OECD Indicators. This figure is almost double the OECD and EU averages (both at 11%), highlighting the relevance of this type of training in the country.
Aligned with its commitment to helping students, educators, and families adapt to the new learning landscape, ODILO, the Spanish edtech company transforming how people and organizations learn through a unique digital ecosystem, has identified the five key trends. These trends will define the Higher Education agenda for the 2025–2026 academic year.
- Technological Consolidation: Implementing AI Inside and Outside the Classroom
In 21st-century education, artificial intelligence has evolved from a mere promise into an everyday reality in academic life. From academic management platforms to tutoring systems and learning resources, AI has become a key tool for optimizing classroom experiences and advancing toward personalized learning tailored to each user’s needs.
This technological wave, embraced by the education system in recent years, now requires more than simple implementation. The challenge lies in integrating the most advanced updates ethically and effectively. Doing so will have a positive impact on how students learn and on educators’ roles, enabling them to devote more time to guiding students in critical skills and less time to administrative tasks.
- Growth of Personalized Learning Models
Personalizing content and learning pathways will be essential to address each student’s pace and aspirations. This approach enhances the educational experience and helps reduce dropout rates.
In this area, data collection and analytics will allow academic institutions to adapt their programs more precisely, ensuring that each student has access to tailored content and formats.
- A Multi-Format Approach to Maximize Learning
Knowledge is no longer limited to textbooks. In contemporary education, podcasts, audiobooks, videos, masterclasses, and interactive experiences offer alternatives that support personalization and more effectively address different learning styles.
Embracing a variety of formats also improves accessibility, fostering the inclusion of students with diverse abilities and cognitive styles. In addition, it enables academic institutions to connect with new generations through more engaging, dynamic tools, aligned with their interest in richer, more immersive experiences that are closer to their everyday lives.
- Education with a Social Purpose
Beyond academic excellence, both universities and vocational training institutions must take a more active role in developing social, emotional, and civic competencies. Knowledge of human rights, democratic values, and sustainability is just as crucial as acquiring technical or specialized skills in each discipline.
This area also includes soft skills such as teamwork, leadership, and effective communication—competencies increasingly valued by employers and essential for students to adapt to change, make informed decisions, and build a socially responsible future.
- Digital Skills as a Guarantee of Employability
Across industries and business areas, the labor market demands professionals with a solid foundation in digital skills. For this reason, Higher Education must promote these competencies across all programs, preparing students to thrive in a world where technology is constantly evolving.
This includes proficiency with digital tools and critical skills such as data management, cybersecurity, and autonomous collaboration in virtual environments. Incorporating these transversal skills increases employability and supports professional growth in a complex, highly digitalized work environment.
“The start of the academic year marks a turning point for Higher Education. Institutions that can integrate purpose-driven technology, advance personalized learning, and invest in social and digital skills will be the ones truly preparing their students to lead the corporate future,” says Ainhoa Marcos, Global VP of Education & Public Sector at ODILO.
