OdiloTID USA is delighted to announce that OdiloConsortia: the Odilo eBook Platform for eBook purchasing, management and lending, will power the Colorado Statewide eBook Pilot project (eVokeColorado) funded by a recent LSTA/IMLS grant.
Beginning in October, pilot libraries throughout the state of Colorado will offer eBooks to their communities via different channels for eBook lending. The model apart from big publishers will incorporate library-created content, as well as content from midlist publishers, emerging small, independent and self-publishers. It also integrates eBook titles from large distributors, such as OverDrive and 3M.
The platform will be the first independent, statewide, open eBook platform in the U.S., and will break through restrictions imposed on library eBooks by the major publishers. Through The Colorado Library Consortium (CLiC), which oversees the holdings of more than 40 rural and small libraries of various types (public, school, academic, special), all Colorado libraries will be able to:
• Provide more digital content to their patrons and their communities.
• Access midlist, independent, or self-published works.
• Publish or share library-produced digital works, such as local histories.
• Enhance purchasing power for all libraries.
Colorado Libraries will be able to create their own library purchasing centers in addition to the open Marketplace offered by OdiloTID. Libraries will be able to share their collections or acquire titles for use only by their respective library systems. The OdiloTID platform will integrate with existing ILS systems and other eContent delivery solutions.
OdiloTID will work with grant partners CLiC and Douglas County Libraries to integrate with the Open Source Discovery Layer, VuFind and the Open Source ILS Koha.
“The project represents an important alternative to today’s fragmented and distributor-centric market. It allows libraries to better manage emerging content, and integrate a mix of content sources.” said Jamie Larue, Director of the Douglas County Libraries and Project Director.
Rodrigo Rodriguez, President of OdiloTID of America & Middle East, believes that other states can follow in the steps of Colorado and that this can be the first step toward a U.S National eBook Library Lending System. OdiloTID has experience creating and launching national and big library networks worldwide, said Rodriguez. A country-wide OdiloTID platform in Chile serves two million patrons, a statewide platform serves Badajoz Spain, and the Instituto Cervantes International platform serves libraries in 45 countries. OdiloTID has also launched a pilot project with some of The American Theological Library Association (ATLA) member libraries.
OdiltoTID has worked closely with Monique Sendze, IT Director for Douglas County Librariesand project manager for this effort. Sendze said she finds the Odilo platform “mature, robust, scalable and flexible.”
